Jeweller calls for sourcing rigour

Wednesday 07th 2006f June, 2006
Jeweller Michelle Dene Reagan has called on dealers and jewellery makers to ask their suppliers of precious metals and gemstones where they have sourced their products.

Ms Reagan is the president of Dene Jewelry, which has produced a line of Fair Trade jewellery making use of reclaimed 14-carat gold, and is open about the sources of her company's diamonds.

In an interview with Rapaport News during the JCK Las Vegas Show she explained her interest in the positive impact of Fair Trade products and urged industry figures to source responsibly.

Fair trade has become a hot topic in the jewellery and precious metals industries. By their nature, companies that mine gold and other precious metals need to be more careful about corporate social responsibility (CSR) than other companies, because they operate in developing countries where sensitive issues must be addressed.

Last month's JCK Las Vegas Jewelry Show featured a Rapaport Fair Trade Jewelry Conference, which indicated the concern that the jewellery industry has for improving the social conditions of those involved in producing gold, diamonds and other jewellery products.

Meanwhile the chairman of Anglo American, a major gold producer, recently told the BBC's Today programme that promoting CSR had brought a wide range of benefits to his firm.
