A student at the University of British Columbia is to receive a scholarship worth up to C$200,000 for work into the environmental impact of global gold mining.

Samuel Spiegel was among the winners of the Trudeau Scholarships, which are awarded to fifteen doctoral social sciences and humanities students. The winners were announced yesterday by the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.

The scholarships aim to provide students with a means of addressing societal concerns through learning, research and debate.

"Each year we search for young, influential minds capable of generating public discussion on important Canadian and global topics in a fresh way," said Trudeau Foundation chairman Roy L Heenan.

Mr Spiegel, an interdisciplinary student at the Vancouver university, also aims to protect the well-being of miners.

Other winners of the 2006 Trudeau Scholarship include Catherine Belair, who aims to research hunger in northeastern Brazil; and Lisa Helps who is researching homelessness in North America.
