Gold producers and labour unions in South Africa will work to halt the decline of the country's gold industry, Reuters reports.
A strong rand has led to export earnings declining and the industry was also recently shaken by strikes involving about 100,000 workers.
Industry and labour figures, together with government representatives, will work with consultants to boost the sector. Gold producers that are involved include AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields and Harmony Gold.
However, it was noted that a new method of wage negotiation will not be introduced.
"This has nothing to do with wage negotiations, this is about the overall competitiveness of gold mining in South Africa and its job retention capacity," said project facilitator Gavin Hartford, speaking to Reuters.
