Indigenous centre celebrates fifth anniversary

Friday 28th 2006f July, 2006
The Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre (AILC), which has received support from resource company and gold producer BHP Billiton, celebrates its five-year anniversary this year.

Its mission is to support and encourage indigenous Australians in developing the confidence to lead communities, organisations and the nation.

The centre provides sponsored courses, the only ones of their kind in Australia, and so far around 400 people have graduated from them. It recently moved its operations to the Australian capital, Canberra.

Last year BHP Billiton was the recipient of a Special Award at the Australian Prime Minister's Awards for Excellence in Community Business Partnerships, for work done with groups including the AILC.

The Australian/British firm is the largest mining company in the world and is listed on socially-responsible indices, including the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and the FTSE4Good index.
