Buenaventura invests in Peruvian infrastructure

Friday 29th 2006f September, 2006
Mining firm Buenaventura has invested around $50 million in infrastructure in Arequipa, near its Cerro Verde copper mine in Peru.

Buenaventura, which also has gold mining interests in Peru, has put the money into sewage and water projects.

The company's chief executive, Roque Benavides, told the Denver Gold Forum that, following the end of protests, the company was "going to see a much brighter future", Reuters reports.

"The problems had to do with Cerro Verde being near Peru's second largest city," he explained. "[The protesters] said Cerro Verde should contribute more to the infrastructure. We believe there will be no more confrontations now."

Over the past decade Buenaventura has contributed $1.3 million to the local population in the Castilla province of Arequipa. Across the country, the firm has helped to build schools, hospitals, roads, aerodromes and transmission lines.

"Buenventura is aware of the importance of maintaining sound relations with the communities in which it operates, respecting their culture while protecting the surrounding ecosystem," the company said.
