ASG works to improve mine safety

Australian Solomons Gold (ASG) has been working to improve safety at the Gold Ridge gold project, located on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands.

In its year-end financial results statement, ASG said it has been "actively working" to make improvements on the project since it acquired the facility last May. Work has included site restoration and the improvement of safety and security.

Gold Ridge was operated by Ross Mining until June 2000 and produced around 210,000 ounces of gold. However, after 2000 the mine was left dormant and fell prey to theft and vandalism.

"Major refurbishment and selected replacements will be required to recommence operations," ASG said.

Gold was first found in the area in the 16th century by a Spanish explorer. The modern Gold Ridge project was initiated when an Australian botanist traced alluvial gold to the site of the development.

Australian Solomons Gold believes that safety in its operations is "paramount" and company policy includes developing a strong culture of health and safety in the workplace.
