Small scale gold miners fight back

Small scale gold miners are hoping to highlight any potential rule breaking by larger mining companies.
It is understood that Carslone Private, owned by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), is to be investigated for contravening the Mines and Minerals Act after a number of smaller scale miners reported illegal gold seizures, reports NewZimbawe.com.
Titus Nyatanga, a director with the ministry of mines, speaking at a parliamentary committee hearing, explained: "Carslone is a company formed by the RBZ to carry out mining activities. However, its association with former members of the panners' association is something that needs to be investigated. All that warrants an investigation."
It is understood that a number of people have been arrested as the government attempts to control illegal capture of the country's widespread mineral resources.
There have also been a number of reports of possible police corruption as some small scale producers have been forced to close down their operations following police action. In some cases, the closed down operations have been re-opened to gold panners who have given proceeds to Carslone Private.
