Golden horse racing trophies up for auction

Friday 27th 2007f April, 2007
A series of gold-plated Woodford Reserve Mint Julep cups are being auctioned in preparation for the world famous Kentucky Derby.

The auction of 132 exclusive cups, each which bears the name of a previous Kentucky Derby winner, is being overseen by Christie's.

Nearly half of the cups sold within the first five hours of availability, and the cups featuring more recent Derby winners proved to be the most popular.

Proceeds from the Barbaro cup, which currently holds the second highest bid at $1,650, will be spent on research into laminitis, a disease which targets a horse's hooves and which led to the death of racehorse Barbaro, winner of the 2006 Kentucky Derby.

"The $1,000 Mint Julep cup promotion is a win-win for everyone involved," said Wayne Rose, brand director for Woodford Reserve, official bourbon of the Derby.

Woodford Reserve's Mint Julep cups are 24-carat gold-plate and come engraved with the names of past winners and a horse head burgee.

The 133rd annual Kentucky Derby is set to take place on Saturday 5th May. It is the most prestigious horse race in the US.
