A group of Scouts from New Mexico in the United States experienced the thrill of the gold rush recently, when they panned for gold at a Memorial Day weekend event.
The group of boys, from Carlsbad, were among the many visitors to White Oaks, New Mexico, who took part in authentic gold rush era activities, including panning through soil looking for gold.
When the boys discovered some pieces of gold, bigger than flecks, among the soil, they were amazed. "It's too big," they exclaimed, according to Alamogordo Daily News.
Danny Batastini, a local gold enthusiast, told the paper: "Gold is very heavy, almost twice as heavy as lead. There's no mistaking it ... if it's gold, you won't miss it."
A kids' rodeo and a staged shootout were also among the activities on hand to make the gold rush celebration memorable.
Some 300 pans were taken to New Mexico to prepare for the event, with any do-it-yourself prospectors allowed to keep any gold they found, according to the White Oaks website.
