Friday 31st 2007f August, 2007
The United States Mint has put a new gold coin on sale, the first in the new First Spouse Gold Coin collection.

Depicting wives of presidents, four 24-carat gold $10 (£4.95) coins will be issued, released to coincide with the launch of new $1 coins featuring past presidents of the United States.

Each First Spouse coin will be minted in proof and uncirculated condition, with the initial choice - featuring the wife of Thomas Jefferson and known as Thomas Jefferson's Liberty - available to buy for $429.95 as proof and $410.95 uncirculated.

Jefferson was actually widowed for 19 years by the time he became president.

"This beautiful coin captures a classic image of Liberty from Jefferson's time, connecting us to the history of our coinage and our nation's most precious value," said United States Mint director Ed Moy.

Just 20,000 of each gold coin type have been minted, with the Mint putting a one-per-household limit on the coins initially.
