Gold producer Hemlo Mines sponsored two school teams in a recent cardboard boat race competition.
The Ontario Mining Association (OMA) - of which Hemlo Mines is a member - reports that two four-person teams from Margaret Twomey Public School were supported by the company when the Skills Canada Ontario race took place.
Lynne Whitmore, a teacher at the school, said that the teams, one of which was from grade seven and other from grade eight, were very enthusiastic to participate in the event.
"They stayed after school on numerous occasions to build and test model boats. They were keen to come in to work on a Sunday," she commented.
The cardboard boat races are held by Skills Canada Ontario with the aim of testing children's problem solving skills with a task that draws on various aspects of the curriculum, the OMA explains.
The Hemlo deposit is responsible for about a third of Ontario's annual gold production, according to Venetia Bodycomb of McGill University.
