Boy scout event 'recreates gold rush'

Friday 15th 2008f February, 2008
A boy scout troop from Iowa recently participated in a derby event based on the gold rush.

The Mid-Iowa Council's 2008 district Klondike Derby on February 2nd saw members of Ankeny's Boy Scout Troop participate in a number of activities based on the theme of the gold rush, reports the Des Moines Register.

With activities aiming to develop team-building, first aid, wilderness shelter construction, fishing and knot tying among other skills, the scouts earned 'gold nuggets' as rewards after completing each element of the contest.

Awards were given for scout patrols who earned the most gold nuggets, as well as quickest completion time and fastest sled.

However, a rogue element was present in the form of 'claim jumpers', who would steal the gold earned by participants if they could not defend it properly.

Gold was first discovered in Klondike in the late 19th century, sparking a gold rush since which some 12.5 million ounces of the precious metal have been discovered.
