Own a piece of gold history

Wednesday 30th 2008f April, 2008
Treasure lovers are being invited to acquire their own piece of history in the form of a gold bar.

From Tuesday, fans of the precious metal will be able to purchase a share in the 20 gold bars believed to still reside in wrecked remains of the SS Laurentic, which sank during the First World War while it was transporting gold from the government as payment for munitions.

Its owners are now offering history buffs the opportunity to get involved in the story behind the ship, which went down in Lough Swilly in County Donegal, reports the BBC.

The owners advise interested parties that such a purchase would be unlikely to yield financial rewards.

"The shares are more a gesture, to own something of historic value that's sitting in Irish waters," diver Ivan Irwin told the news provider.

A member of the White Star Line, the SS Laurentic sank when she struck two mines, going under within one hour.
