Deep River kids are gold miners for a day

Friday 18th 2008f July, 2008
Children from Hobart, Indiana, recently got the chance to be gold miners for one day only thanks to an event held at Deep River County Park.

According to the Post-Tribune, the historical discovery series organised at the park by the Lake County Parks Department taught children aged three and over some intriguing facts about one of America's most iconic periods.

Participants in the programme played characters from the gold rush, such as James Marshall, who first discovered the yellow metal in 1848.

"I like that I get to play a different character every week," he told the news provider.

"Last week, I was a cowboy."

Elizabeth Fairbanks, one of the programmers with the park, added that the scheme tries to teach young people history they might not otherwise learn about, attempting to give them insight into the perspective of gold miners.

A recent YourHub.com article highlighted a gold panning event at Clear Creek History Park in Colorado.
