A number of mining organisations in Canada are supporting a proposal to amend industry laws to allow for the voluntary rehabilitation of former mine sites.
The Ontario Mining Association reports on its website that it has been joined by several sector associations, including MiningWatch Canada, in its support for the provincial government's moves to amend the Mining Act.
"We commend the Ontario government for removing the legal barriers to the industry's hands-on participation in the voluntary rehabilitation of Crown-held abandoned mine hazards by amending the Mining Act and proposing regulations that establish clear rules for undertaking voluntary rehabilitation projects," said Adrianna Stech, manager of environment and sustainability with the association.
Ramsey Hart, programme coordinator for MiningWatch, said that the proposed amendment is a useful step towards addressing positive change in the industry.
Wesdome Gold, a member of the Ontario Mining Association, recently poured its millionth ounce of gold.
