Gold coins will be issued to mark the victory of South Korean figure skater Yu-Na Kim at the recent Winter Olympics in Vancouver, it has been reported.

The Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) said 30,000 of the gold commemorative pieces have been struck, along with an additional 30,000 silver coins, news service the Chosun Ilbo stated.

One side of the coin features a depiction of Kim's performance in Vancouver - which saw the 19-year-old break her own world record score in the short programme - as well as her signature and the insignia of the KOC.

The coins will have a face value of A$25 (£15).

Due to the restrictions of the Bank of Korea act, coins minted by the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation cannot be sold to generate added value, so the KOC has worked with Australia's Perth Mint to produce the coins and it will distribute them in Tuvalu.

A portion of the profits raised from their sale will go towards supporting the development of sport in South Korea.
