A luxury Swiss hotel has undergone a major renovation and restoration project that involved painstakingly applying gold leaf to make it shine.

Travel Video News reports that the Beau-Rivage Palace, situated on the shores of Lake Geneva, has recently completed its project to bring La Rotonde - originally built in 1908 - back to its former glory.

Stratigraphy was employed to find out what colour of paint was used when the space was first opened, with this shade then being reapplied, while the original carpets were repaired.

Meanwhile, professionals uncovered the room's fresco and made them an eye-catching feature once more.

During the process, 1,584 pounds of paint were applied to the walls, along with seven pounds of gold leaf to make the space gleam.

Over the years, the hotel has played host to guests including Nelson Mandela, Charlie Chaplin and Coco Chanel and boasts on-site spa facilities and a luxury restaurant.
