Choosing a ring to pop the question with - whether it is a simple gold band or large sparkler - is one of the most "seminal decisions" a man will ever make in his relationship, one writer has claimed.Nick Churchouse, in an article for Stuff, said picking out the perfect ring can be a huge choice for a man, adding it is one of the "greatest blind stabs in the dark" he is ever likely to make.
He adds that while many guys will talk to their partner's friend about what she likes, borrow another ring for sizing or work out what she would like based on her style, it can still be difficult to find the band of her dreams.
Mr Churchouse explains that some "smart" men choose a "proposal ring" that they will just use to pop the question with, allowing their partner to then pick out her actual engagement jewellery.
When ring shopping, he advises men to first find out the size of his girlfriend's finger, check that it will fit in with her lifestyle and choose a band that compliments the shape of her fingers.
Commenting on the article in her Stuff blog, Jane Yee said it would be a "brave man" who proposes without a ring.
