A number of artefacts from the Staffordshire Hoard - including several gold items - have gone on display for the first time.

Overall, 19 new objects have been added to the exhibition at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent, including filigree snakes, sword hilt collars, helmet fragments and a possible inlay decoration from a drinking horn.

There are now around 80 artefacts from the hoard on show at the museum. It is the first time members of the public have seen these exhibits since the sixth and seventh centuries.

The addition of the items to the display comes as a new campaign to raise money for the conservation of the Staffordshire Hoard begins.

Hazel Lyth of Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: "These new items demonstrate the scope of this incredible collection," adding: "We are still learning what many of these items are, why they were made and what they were used for."

The hoard was named the Best Archaeological Discovery at the British Archaeological Awards ceremony held on July 19th at the British Museum.
