Gold objects from Sumatra are to go on show in Singapore from tomorrow (July 30th).

The Sumatra: Isle of Gold display will run at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) until November 7th and will exhibit more than 300 items reflecting the Indonesian island's history and culture.

Sumatra was known as the Island of Gold in ancient times because it served as a trading hub for south-east Asia and because it was home to a wealth of natural resources, particularly gold.

Some of the items set to go on show include the gold crown worn by the Sultan of Siak, as well as treasures recovered from shipwrecks and Bronze Age artefacts dating back 2,500 years.

Heidi Tan, senior curator at the ACM, told the Straits Times: "Through this exhibition, we hope that many Singaporeans will discover the richness of Sumatra's history and culture, and the ancient links between Singapore and one of our closest neighbours."

The artefacts come from collections held by the ACM, the National Museum of Indonesia, the Museum Volkenkunde and private collections.

Sumatra: Isle of Gold is the first such global touring show focusing on Sumatran culture to take place.
